1 My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. But if someone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One. 2 And He is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
3 And by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, I know Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he remains in Him ought himself also to walk as He walked.
7 Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you heard. 8 On the other hand, I am writing you a new commandment that is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is still in the darkness even now. 10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing causing offence in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for His name's sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, little children, because you know the Father. 14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 15 Do not love the world, nor the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, its lust also. But he who does the will of God continues for ever.
18 Little children, it is the final hour. And as you heard that antichrist was coming, even now many antichrists have arisen, by which we know that it is the final hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would have stayed with us. But they went out so they could be made known, because they all are not of us. 20 But you have an anointment from the Holy One, and all of you know. 21 I did not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one denying the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He promised us: eternal life! 26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are misleading you. 27 But as for you, the anointment that you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for someone to be teaching you. But since His anointment teaches you about all things and is true and is no lie, just as He taught you, remain in Him.
28 And now, little children, remain in Him, so when He is revealed we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 Since you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who is practicing righteousness has been born of Him.
